Human vs Robotic microsurgery in RAMSES2025
Purpose
The event aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy of robotic microsurgery using the Symani system against traditional human microsurgery using an optical microscope (Mitaka MM51) for microvascular anastomosis of a 0.5-mm diameter artificial vessel. The assessment will employ both subjective and objective measures, overseen by referees. This comparison is essential for clarifying the advantages and disadvantages associated with each surgical method.
Event Overview
As a microsurgeon practicing robotic microsurgery (Symani), we are excited to share my participation in this event. Dr. Satomi Koide from St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, specializing in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Hand Surgery, has agreed to be a part of this significant event.
Recruitment
We will utilize the RAMSES2025 homepage and Instagram to recruit standard surgeons who utilize optical microscopy and have less than eight years of experience in microvascular anastomosis (e.g., pre-specialist medical trainees).
Participating Teams
Participating teams will be recruited in advance through an open call.
We aim to include at least four to six surgical teams, consisting of:
- - Two plastic surgery teams: one from the Cancer Institute Ariake and the other from Showa University.
- - A minimum of two orthopedic teams, including the Kanto Workers' hospital team.
Teams will have the opportunity to participate in the competition on the day of the event.
Event Details
- - Anastomosis Time Limit: Each team will have a time limit of 30 minutes to complete the anastomosis, and the procedure must be recorded for evaluation.
- - Date: The tournament is scheduled for **Tuesday, October 14, 2025**, which is the first morning of RAMSES 2025.
- - During this time, preliminary examinations for anastomosis will be conducted using artificial vessel of 0.5mm diameter by standard microsurgeon utilizing optical microscopy (Mitaka MM51).
Finals Structure
The finals will feature a competition between the winning teams from both plastic and orthopedic surgery against Dr. Satomi Koide, who will represent the Symani users.
Venue Information
Both rounds of the competition, preliminary and final, will take place at RAMSES 2025:
- - Symani System: Located in Hospitality Room 1.
- - Mitaka MM51: Located in Hospitality Room 1.
On the first day of the event, the judges, including Dr. Okutsu and members of the JPRS Robotic Committee, will observe the anastomosis during the lunch break from 12:20 to 13:50.
Assessing each procedure and announcing scores during the intermission from 16:20 to 16:30.
The finals are set to occur from 19:00 to 19:30, coinciding with the commencement of the Gala Dinner, where winners will be publicly announced.
The final match will be broadcast live at the Gala Dinner venue.
The audience will also have an opportunity to provide feedback during this segment.

2. Microsurgery Robot Training Experience
- Date: Tuesday, October 14, 2025
- Time: 9:00 – 16:30 (last reservation at 15:50)
- Venue: RAMSES 2025 Hospitality Room
- Sponsored by: Gunze Medical Co., Ltd.
Overview
We are pleased to offer a hands-on training session for physicians using a microsurgery robot.
This program is a simplified version of the actual training program and consists of two parts:
- 1) A lecture by an instructor to learn about the product.
- 2) Training on basic operations using a simulator, followed by hands-on practice with the actual robot for anastomosis.
*After the lecture, we kindly ask participants to complete a short survey.
Eligibility
This program is open to all physicians interested in microsurgery robots.
